ABOUT SING LIT STATION’S YOUTH FRINGE: OPEN CALL

Targeted towards youths aged between 13 and 25 years old, Sing Lit Station’s annual open call for the Youth Fringe team calls on young individuals who are passionate in literature and aspire to work in the arts industry as programmers, curators, presenters and more. Participants can look forward to:

  • Gaining professional working experience in arts programming/curation

  • Meeting like-minded peers and future collaborators

  • Improving their student portfolio

In 2024, Sing Lit Station expanded the open call into a holistic developmental programme that prioritised on these three main roles:

Youth Curator
Shortlisted applicants aged between 13 to 18 years old were invited to join Idea Incubation Sessions, where they learnt the basics of arts programming to pitch their ideas for Singapore Writers Festival. In 2024, we worked with talented youth curators, namely: Fitrah Qorirah Binte Mohamad Zahrin, Fallace Poh, Ramakannan Shrujay, Dorine Wu, Natalie Tham, Kim Jisoo, Camelia Chew, Ayden Ricafort and Samuel Gay to bring a total of 8 official Singapore Writers Festival programmes.

Youth Moderator
Shortlisted moderators aged between 13 - 21 years old served as presenters and hosts on selected Youth Fringe Panels/Programmes. Selected applicants learnt how to guide conversation between writers, how to ask good questions and how to engage both panel participants and the general audience. Our moderators for 2024 were: Lee Jie Yu, Kethy Li, Pappu Akshta Milind, Shaik Aqeel, Patrick Nott, Czaana Saxena, Priyanshi Mohanty, Sadvi Sethu Narayanan and Norman Poon.

Youth Outreach Team
Open to youths aged between 18 - 25 years old, the Youth Outreach Team comprised of content creators and photographers. Our team spent two weeks crawling the festival grounds to capture the best of Singapore Writers Festival in a myriad of photos, videos and wacky TikTok content. Our team comprised of: Amadeus Seah, Josh Matthew Maligon Querimit, Elizabeth Nicole Poon, Aschea Ng, Dorine Wu, Foo Zee Yann, Hannah Miriam Fernando and Hannah Jade.

WHAT WE ACHIEVED IN 2024

Together with our team of talented and passionate youths, we programmed a total of 8 Youth Fringe programmes, alongside 3 experiential programmes for Singapore Writers Festival. Our content reached more than 35,000 people digitally. But numbers aside, our Youth Fringe programme also provided these extraordinary individuals incredible memories, and new friendships in the literary scene.

TESTIMONIALS

It was such a great opportunity and the panelists as well as the audience were really engaging and interested in the discussion.
— Czaana Saxena, Youth Moderator, Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me: A Swiftie’s Guide to Confessional Poetry
I think some of the stronger personalities on the panel tried to reframe and challenge the approach he originally prepared, which may have diluted his original line of questioning. But I think he stood his ground and only made refinements within reason, and got a rich discussion out of us in the end. The audience loved his wit and charm, too!
— Feedback from one of the panelists from Rubrics for Success: How Singapore’s Education System Shapes Our Future for Patrick Nott Pei De
