Nurture Literary Talent; Enrich Singaporean Stories

Support Writer Development

In 2024, our not-so-little station remains committed as ever to our key goal: supporting established and emerging writers as they navigate their artistic and professional journeys. We empower writers of all ages and backgrounds to develop their craft and explore new possibilities. That’s why programmes like the Jalan Besar Fellowship and Manuscript Bootcamp are so integral to what we do. Help us keep them going in 2025.

The Jalan Besar Fellowship fosters groundbreaking Sing Lit projects for the community.

  • 18 applications

  • 3 groundbreaking projects

  • $9,000 disbursed

The Jalan Besar Fellowship has been instrumental in fostering literary projects that engage with Sing Lit and its community. This year, we received 18 impressive applications and disbursed $9,000 in funds and resources to 3 selected Fellows. This support has facilitated the creation of groundbreaking projects such as a collaborative Sing Lit mural, the publication of 3 chapbooks, and an inclusive platform for Muslim writers.

Manuscript Bootcamp embodies our commitment to nurture emerging talent.

  • 16 submissions

  • 4 of Singapore’s best nonfiction writers

  • Prize-winning alumni

Manuscript Bootcamp embodies our commitment to nurture emerging talent. The 2024 edition focussed on the production of creative nonfiction in Singapore. From a pool of 16 applicants, we meticulously selected the top 6 most promising nonfiction writers. These chosen "bootcampers" embarked on an intensive editorial journey, seeding new manuscripts and developing their skills with a panel of experienced practitioners.

Over the years, Bootcamp alumni have won or been shortlisted for the Singapore Literature Prize (Samuel Lee, Ng Yi-Sheng, Amanda Chong, Tse Hao Guang, Hamid Roslan), or have garnered an international reputation (Clarissa Goenawan). Other authors of note who've been through the programme include David Wong, Daryl Lim Wei Jie, Jennifer Anne Champion, Ang Shuang and Ruth Tang.

Your donations matter

Annually, Sing Lit Station runs these programmes at a loss of $17,000. While we are able to cover 80% of costs through the Major Company Grant, we need your help to close the remaining gap of $4,000. Your support is vital in sustaining quality writer development programmes that nurture literary excellence and elevate Sing Lit on the global stage.

Testimonials

“I am most proud of being able to bring such diverse participants together every weekend, and hearing their stories, receiving feedback from them that they enjoyed the programme–that it was therapeutic and to invite them again if there are similar events in the future” - Anne Neo Hui Ting, Jalan Besar Fellowship 2024

“Meeting the poetry community in an incubation space was very lovely, to be treated and taken seriously at this stage of our careers is a gift I don't take for granted.” - Dianne Araral, Manuscript Bootcamp (Poetry) 2023

“The funding was especially helpful in remunerating collaborators not only for their time, but also their labour and knowledge exchange. Most times, collaborations and/or collective action within creative spaces, both art and literary communities, are hard to foster due to the lack of resources.” - nor, Jalan Besar Fellowship 2023

“I was astonished that they took my silly little project as seriously as they did, and grateful that everyone including the judges, organizers, and speakers took so much time into giving me the best experience possible.” - Steven Sy, Manuscript Bootcamp (Prose) 2022
