ABOUT

Vivien Yap is a singer-songwriter and writer from Singapore with over a million streams on digital streaming platforms. Her debut EP, Fables, was released in 2019 with an exclusive physical release in Japan. To date, she has released over 4 EPs, along with international collaborations with Japanese and Korean artists.

In 2020, Vivien and Nigel Cheah were awarded “Best Original Song” at the National Youth Film Awards for their song Class Mates. She also rewrote and sang female hygiene company Kotex’s theme songs for 2021 and 2022. Her experience working and writing in the music industry has seen her collaborating with producers globally.

*NEW* LYRIC WRITING 101: A STUDY OF MUSIC AND LYRICS

Availability: 2.5hrs - 3hrs per session; available in a series of 2 to 4 sessions
Description: Not everyone can play an instrument, but everyone can write a song! In this workshop, singer-songwriter Vivien Yap will take participants through the basics of putting word to music. With over two million streams on Spotify and having written music for various ad campaigns, learn about the nuances of lyric-writing across various genres of music with Vivien Yap. Perfect for music-lovers, pick the minds of your favourite song writers from the vaults of Taylor Swift to the sparkly world of K-Pop and more. 
Learning Outcomes: learn about the basics of lyric writing by analysing and breaking apart some of this century's biggest pop songs; learn how music affects lyrics, and how the context of genre and culture can affect lyric writing; participants will all have their hand in writing lyrics, and writing their own original song.

WAXING LYRICAL: LEARNING POETIC DEVICES WITH POP MUSIC
For: 
secondary; 5 - 25 pax
Availability: 2 hours, 2.5 hours; single session
Description: Is pop music so irrelevant from literature? This introductory workshop reframes the fundamentals and application of poetic devices in a fun and engaging way that relooks the traditional way of studying literature. Students will learn to internalise and apply the basics of poetic devices by analysing their effect in pop music from some of the world’s biggest pop stars.

Paired with Vivien’s work experience in the music and entertainment industry, the workshop will equip students with more confidence and interest in applied literature concepts as well as inspire them to be more sensitive and critical in internalising the written word. All materials used in this workshop are PG with no vulgarities and coarse language.
Learning Outcomes: Students will develop a deeper level of understanding of poetic devices and critical analysis of the written form through the critical analysis of the lyrics of pop music, understand that poetic devices are not strictly limited to the study of prescribed academic texts, understand that there are various, subjective ways to interpret and appreciate music and poetry, and gain a brief introduction to the music industry and the business of pop music.

K-POP ON! SONGWRITING AND TRANSCREATION

secondary, junior college; 5 - 25 pax
Availability: 2.5 hours - 4 hours; single session, double session
Description: Calling all stans! Take your fandoms to the next level in this songwriting workshop. Students will learn the basics of songwriting through the framework of translating K-Pop songs in varied contexts. Through the analysis and breakdown of music, lyrics, and the K-Pop entertainment industry, students will learn about songwriting within the limits of music, branding and culture and ultimately have a go at writing and recording/performing (based on tools available) their own versions of translated K-Pop hits.

This workshop is conducted in English, with all written material and teaching resources being in English.
Learning Outcomes: Students will learn through application about the differences and nuances of translation and transcreation, understand and learn about the challenges in songwriting as a form of creative writing, develop and increased sensitivity to the written word within the framework of music in terms of cadence, syllabic usage, and the importance of enunciation, and develop confidence in performance through repeated trial and error through the song writing process.
