முதுமையின் அரவணைப்பில்
சுலோசனா கார்த்திகேசு

இளைமையின் பிடியில் நடனமாடினோம்
பரந்த நீல வானம் போல, நிறைந்தகனவுகளூடன்
கவலையோ அக்கறையோ இல்லாமல்
எதிர்காலம் நம் கையில் என இறுமாந்தோம்

ஆனால், வருடங்கள் ஆற்றுநீர் போல ஓட
வயதின் மென்மையான விளையாடல் தொடங்குகிறது

கோடுகள் முகத்தில் ஆழமாக ஓடுகின்றன
இங்கும், அங்குமாக, கசங்கிய வரைபடம் போல
ஒவ்வொரு சுருக்கமும், சொல்லாத ஒரு கதை சொல்கிறது
வென்ற துக்கங்கள், அடைந்த இன்பங்கள்

அந்தியின் மென்மையான நிழலில்,
பழைய, புதிய ஒரு கருணை வெளிப்படுகிறது
இளமை கடந்து ஞானம் மலர்கிறது
இனி வரும் வருடங்கள் புத்துயிர் கொடுக்கிறது

முடி உதிர்ந்து, வழுக்கை விழுந்தும்
வாழ்க்கையின் நெழிவு வளைவுகளை
எதிர் கொண்டு சமாளீப்போம்
நம் நடை தளரலாம்
ஆனால் … உள்ளம் கழுகு போல்
விண்ணில் சிறகு விரித்துப் பறக்கிறது

முதுமை வாழ்க்கையின் ஒரு பக்கமே
அன்பும் ஆதருவும்
சந்தோஷமும் கண்ணீரும்
உருண்டோடும் வருடங்களய் வரையறுக்கின்றன

இறுதியில், நாம் எப்படி வாழ்ந்தோம்.
எப்படி வாழ்கிறோம் என்பதே முக்கியம்

இதுவே நாம் நம் வரும் தலைமுறைக்கு
கொடுக்கும் செல்வம்

In youth's clasp, we danced through time,
With dreams as vast as the wide blue skies
With no worry nor concern
Future bright and sure

As years like rivers flow,
Age's gentle touch begins to show.
Lines run deep upon our faces
Criss-crossing like a crumpled map

Each wrinkle tells a tale untold,
Of joys embraced and sorrows conquered
Of triumphs and failures
Testimony to a life well lived

In twilight's gentle shade,
A grace both old and new emerges
Wisdom blossoms
Life ahead still holds wonders

With silver strands or bald pate
We navigate life's winding stream.
Our steps may be slow, yet our spirits soar,
Like an eagle in full flight

Life is but a journey
As we age, we find what's dear
That love and laughter, joy and tears,
Define the passing of our years.

In the end
The legacy we leave behind
Throbs in the hearts
We’ve touched

Miss Sulosana Karthigasu, a retired civil servant, has served the Singapore Government in various capacities over more than 50 years. She has also acted as a consultant on Tamil language and related cultural issues involving government communication and public outreach, and two Indian non-profit organisations. In the area of creative writing, she is a well-established translator of English and Tamil writings and poems, an occasional contributor to magazines and has contributed poems and short stories to local and foreign non-profit magazines. She has been translating, mostly from Tamil to English, since the Seventies. Some of the publications where her poems/translations have appeared include, Union, Kavimaalai, Goddess in the Living Room, Anthology of Asean Literature, Singa and Sincerely Yours – New Voices in Singapore Poetry.

Poems on the MRT is an initiative by the National Arts Council, in partnership with SMRT and Stellar Ace. Produced by Sing Lit Station, a local literary non-profit organisation, this collaboration displays excerpts of Singapore poetry throughout SMRT’s train network, integrating local literature into the daily experience of commuters. Look out for poems in English, Chinese, Malay, and Tamil in trains on the East-West, North-South and Circle Lines, as well as videos created by local artists and featuring local poets in stations and on trains.
