The fourth session of #PTBookClub will be held on Thursday (20 Mar) as part of the EAT • WORDPLAY • LOVED festival held at @casualpoetlibrary. This time, our theme is ‘Photobooks’—a topic close to home, as Ming and Shu’s friendship began at a photo festival.
Photobooks or photo books? often left unresolved. Similarly, what defines a photobook remains an open question. A wide variety of books engage with photographic practices, but do all books with photographs in them count as photobooks?
We’re curious—what is or isn’t a photobook to you? Or what’s so precious and poignant about the format and its history? Why are some photobooks canonical and others dismissed as “coffee table books”? Even then, what is the value of these publications? What ethical issues are embedded in the form—ethics of representation, post-humourous editing of photobook monographs, and archival responsibilities? And of course, what about the images that captivate us?
Bring along books that have left you in awe, deep thought, or even conflict.
