PERFORMANCE: "Rehearsals for A Folding Scene" with Amelia Barratt, Arnont Nongyao and Daryl Qilin Yam

  • Esplanade 1 Esplanade Drive Singapore, 038981 Singapore (map)

Rehearsals for A Folding Scene features a series of new textual and sonic performances by visual and performance artist Amelia Barratt, sound artist Arnont Nongyao as well as writer Daryl Qilin Yam.

The event relates to the commissioned installation A Folding Scene by Guo-Liang Tan (Singapore) currently on display at the Esplanade Concourse. Staged inside and around Tan’s painterly installation, these performances unfold conversations about form, affect and scenography. During the event, the audience is invited onto the concourse steps to see Tan’s artwork at a close and intimate proximity. The words, sounds and gestures of the performances act as a loose set of imaginings and dilations.

Amelia Barratt (b. Reading, United Kingdom) is an artist based in Glasgow working with painting, writing and performance. Her work has recently been shown at Uferhallen, Berlin; Drawing Room, London; Kendall Koppe, Glasgow; Live Art Development Agency, London; Museum of London and on Resonance FM. Real Life, a collection of ten spoken performance works, was published by Charles Asprey in 2022.

The works of Arnont Nongyao are rooted in his long-term fascination with vibration and sound and their connections with humans, objects, society and social situations. Arnont’s experimental practice unfolds through various mediums and are often participatory in nature to explore how people react with and participate in sound. Arnont has presented work in exhibitions and festivals, including Singapore Biennale 2019, Bangkok Art Biennale 2018 and Sapporo International Art Festival 2017. Arnont is Co-Director of the Chiang Mai Collective, a group of sound artists and musicians working on sound art and experimental music.

Daryl Qilin Yam is a writer, editor and arts organiser from Singapore. He is the author of the novella Shantih Shantih Shantih (2021), shortlisted for the 2022 Singapore Literature Prize, and the novel Lovelier, Lonelier (2021), the Singapore nominee for the 2023 International Dublin Literary Award. He co-founded the literary charity Sing Lit Station.
