We live in a world facing the twin threats of nuclear annihilation and climate change, both resulting from our technological powers. Previous ethics seem insufficient to deal with our technology-altered human condition. This drove Hans Jonas to create a new ethics based on responsibility for the technologies we create.

This seminar will introduce The Imperative of Responsibility: In Search of an Ethics for the Technological Age. Written over 40 years ago, his work remains as relevant today as it was in his era. Jonas's ethics of responsibility is perhaps a much needed retort to balance against the techno-optimism of our times.
