Spoke & Bird #49: Laura Jane Lee, Esther Vincent & Cat Chong

Spoke & Bird is back for its 49th edition with 3 headliners: 3 poets with three brand new poetry collections, Laura Jane Lee, Esther Vincent and Cat Chong!

Laura Jane Lee is a poet from Hong Kong, currently based in Singapore. Under her former name, she founded KongPoWriMo, Subtle Asian Poetry Collective, and is the winner of the Sir Roger Newdigate Prize. Her work has been awarded in various international competitions including the Oxford Brookes International Poetry Competition, Out-Spoken Poetry Prize and the Poetry London Mentorship Scheme, among others. She has been published in journals and newspapers including ORB, HKFP, HK01, QLRS and The Mekong Review, among others. Previous pamphlets include “chengyu: chinoiserie” (Hedgehog Poetry Press, 2020) published under her former name, and “flinch & air” (Out-Spoken Press, 2021)

Esther Vincent Xueming is the author of Red Earth (Blue Cactus Press, 2021), which was a finalist for the 2020 Gaudy Boy Poetry Book Prize. She is the editor-in-chief and founder of The Tiger Moth Review, an independent eco journal of art and literature based in Singapore. She is also co-editor of Making Kin: Ecofeminist Essays from Singapore (Ethos Books, 2021) and two poetry anthologies, Poetry Moves (Ethos Books, 2020) and Little Things (Ethos Books, 2013).

Cat Chong is a poet, publisher, and proud queer crip, whose durational work flails wildly between conceptual and confessional tendencies. They’re a graduate of Royal Holloway’s Poetic Practice MA and a current PhD student at NTU, Singapore. They’ve appeared in numerous anthologies of poetry and their debut pamphlet Plain Air: An Apology in Transit (2021) was recently published with Broken Sleep Books; they’re currently working on their debut collection.
