ABOUT
Pierre Vinclair is the author of over 12 published books, he is also a translator of English and Chinese ancient poetry. He was awarded the Villa Kujoyama in Literature in 2010 and the Heredia Prize from Académie Française in 2014. He is also Chief Editor of Catastrophes, a monthly online poetry magazine and has a PhD in Philosophy of Literature.

TRANSLATING ENGLISH POETRY INTO FRENCH
For: French / French-language students; 10-20 pax

Description: In this translation workshop, experienced poet and translator Pierre Vinclair will guide students in the translation of a contemporary English poem into a French poem. Students will be confronted with the uncertainty of meaning, the yearning for understanding, and will be taught to handle the double dialogue and negotiation one must have with both text and reader.

CONTEMPORARY POETRY: SINGING THE CONCRETE WORLD

Description: Learn through poetry how to find beauty in the modern world – not the “official” beauty seen by tourists, but a more personal and strange beauty that appears in modernity. In a creative writing session, work on the way we look at the world, and the way we shape words and sentences to give a sense of presence to this way of seeing.

FROM ANCIENT CHINA TO MODERN EUROPE
For: Mandarin-language students; 10-20 pax

Description: In this translation workshop, students will take a single Shijing poem and build, step by step, a translation written in French or English. Important questions raised include: How do we take something old and make it new? How do we preserve or sacrifice a sense of the "Chinese"? How might we understand not just the cultural and linguistic gaps, but also the differences in poetics between two times and languages?

RESEARCHING THE LITERARY FIELD
For: Junior college; 10-30 pax

Description: As students and scholars-to-be prepare to undertake academic careers in the literary field, Pierre Vinclair, a PhD in Philosophy of Literature, will impart tips on how to research any literary text, and how researchers examine issues with secondary sources, hypotheses and the proposal of temporary solutions. The history of academic research from the 1950’s to the present will also be covered, examining major influences and outcomes.
