The Way to a Man’s Heart Is Through His Stomach

ARTIST STATEMENT

My university course on parasitology showcased the grossest concepts and photos that my 18-year-old self had ever seen! I thought it was appropriate for the Repulsion prompt, and hope that the wriggling forms of the words and graphics can take you through a scatological journey, where the guts of the matter can also be its heart.

PRAISE

DISGUSTING! The moment I heard the word “orifice” in the recording, I began to feel repulsed. By the time the flatworms came into the picture, I wanted the piece to end, only to be taken for another spin as the reverse recording kicked in and the words were regurgitated. Li-Ming masterfully makes us metaphorically sick. This is a ridiculously clever and all-around excellently executed spoken-word poem.

—Lyrical Lunacy

“The Way to a Man’s Heart Is Through His Stomach” responds to The Repulsive prompt by Lyrical Lunacy.

Li-Ming loves words, whether written, spoken or sung. She works with them too, though they tend to be a lot more technical there! She got her start in poetry just last year at the 2021 "A Very Special Walk" fundraiser for the Autism Resource Centre and has since participated in both SingPoWriMo and SEAPoWriMo. She aspires to write poems that let others experience the world just a little bit differently.
