This course, conducted in Tamil, will explore a broad selection of modern Tamil poems so you can acquire in-depth knowledge regarding the literary aesthetics, style and techniques employed in Tamil poetry. Beginning and emerging Tamil writers will enrich and rework their poems, and also attempt bold new experimentation.

Perundevi has published eight anthologies of poetry and an anthology of microfiction over the past two decades. She is deeply engaged with contemporary Tamil society and culture and a regular contributor of poems, translations and articles to Tamil literary magazines and journals. She has published a volume of essays on sexual violence as a social practice engaging with Tamil literary texts and violence against women. She has also edited a volume of critical essays on the works of the Tamil modernist writer Asokamittiran. An academic by profession, Perundevi has a Ph.D in interdisciplinary human sciences from George Washington University. She is currently an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Siena College. Her research interests include popular religious practices engaging with colonial and post-colonial modernity in southern India, global feminisms, and Tamil literature and cinema.
