This subTEXT reading is inspired by the Singapore Biennale (SB2022), which is ongoing at the Singapore Art Museum (SAM). By naming this seventh edition Natasha, an entity – human or non-human – takes shape, and SB2022 seeks to “move away from its perception as a mega-thematic exhibition and towards an engagement with the ways that art… may be deeply connected to the subject and matter of life.” Is Natasha a given name of a real (or fictitious) person, or a product name, or a metaphor?
In this edition of subTEXT, featured writers take on a mission to interpret their own idea of Natasha as well as ponder over the practice of naming, and the weightage and meaning of names across languages and cultures. They will share at least one poem or fiction excerpt focused on a person or object addressed by his/her/its name, or appropriate pronoun – perhaps, someone might even dedicate a poem or story to Natasha?
