Head2Head: How Do Illustrations Tell a Story?

From slice-of-life to good old-fashioned absurdity, hear from the artists about the stories their artworks tell. The illustrators will cover essential techniques in drawing, exploring themes, concepts and contextual thinking.

Panelist Anngee Neo is a Singapore-based illustrator who creates drawings with an emphasis on storytelling with compelling characters. Her quirky, surreal and whimsical works have breathed life to children’s books such as The Rock and the Bird and Do Gallery Sitters Sit All Day? Things People Really Do In A Museum. She illustrated for campaigns and books by the National Gallery Singapore, National Museum of Singapore, and Esplanade. More info here.

Panelist Farizwan Fajari, professionally known as Speak Cryptic, is a visual artist working and living in Singapore. Inspired by the visual language prevalent within the cultures of comics and underground music, his works primarily deal with the issues pertaining to the human condition. Utilizing personal iconographies and a cast of characters that he has developed over the years, he applies them to various narratives inspired by his observations on current affairs and his immediate environment. Moderator Akshita Nanda is the author of two novels: Beauty Queens of Bishan (Penguin Random House SEA) and Nimita's Place (Epigram Books) which co-won the 2020 Singapore Literature Prize for English Fiction. Nimita's Place was also adapted for the stage and shortlisted for the 2019 Singapore Book Awards.
