What is the role speculative fiction plays in interrogating our current viral climate? How do elements of the fantastic and supernatural represent distance between humans as we know it, and what does this separation say about our physical, social and emotional bonds with one another? In an epoch where social distancing is the norm, authors Meihan Boey and Daryl Qilin Yam take a closer look at the spaces that divide us.

Meihan Boey is the author of a science fiction novella, The Messiah Virus (2019). She is also the vice president of the Association of Comic Artists of Singapore and has scripted several comics, including Supacross and The Once and Marvellous DKD. She is a dedicated comic book and manga fan, an enthusiastic gamer, a persistent triathlete, and not yet a Super Saiyan, though she keeps trying. The Formidable Miss Cassidy is her first novel.

Daryl Qilin Yam is the author of Kappa Quartet, a novel published by Epigram Books in 2016. He is also a co-editor of the SingPoWriMo anthology series, a director at Sing Lit Station, and a stageplay producer at non-profit collective Take Off Productions. He holds a BA (Hons) in English Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Warwick; he won the Second Year Prize from the Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies, and spent an intercalated year studying under the AIKOM program at the University of Tokyo. His prose and poetry have been published in a number of anthologies and literary journals, which include Esquire (Singapore), LONTAR: The Journal of Southeast Asian Speculative Fiction, OF ZOOS, QLRS, and Cha: An Asian Literary Journal.
