Foreword 2021: Soul Ocean

Soul Ocean is a reading and narration of soulful and meditative poems accompanied by experimental music. COVID-19 has taken its toll on the world and the Singapore populace. As we look into the past, present and future, we seek to journey to physical and spiritual realms. There is seeking—crossing borders and seas—and taking leaps of faith behind closed doors. Alternative music and spoken word dare and often defy the boundaries of reasoning. Join this poet and musician duo for an evening of introspection and mind-bending worlds.

Elancharan Gunasekaran is a multidisciplinary artist and poet who is based in Singapore. He has a strange love for all things poetic and sci-fi. Elancharan was the winner of the Montblanc x Esquire Six-Word Story Prize 2017 and the creator of House Haiku, an experimental music series combining poetry and elements of house music. He released his first album Andromeda’s Alien under Red Claw Records.

Yuen Chee Wai is a musician, artist, designer and curator who is based in Singapore. Often inspired by ideas drawn from philosophical and literary texts, along with perspectives glimpsed through the filmic eye and photographic lens, his stylistic oeuvre in improvised music is marked by internalised reflections on memory and loss, invisibility and indeterminacy.
