An Ekphrastic Series invites Singapore’s leading writers, poets and playwrights to respond to our exhibitions, culminating in an invitation to create creative writing responses inspired by our artworks.
In the final edition of the series, poet Amanda Chong leads a tour of Georgette Chen: At Home in the World. A retrospective of artist Georgette Chen (1906–1993), this exhibition critically re-examines her contributions to the development of modern art in Singapore. The show features Chen’s most significant works alongside newly discovered archival materials, shedding light on the lesser-known stories behind her professional and personal lives.
Focusing on Chen’s rich collection of portraits, Amanda Chong will share her reflections on the artist’s sensitivities towards her sitters—amongst them are some of her closest friends and her late husband Eugene Chen. Chong will also conduct a reading of a some poetry pieces she wrote based on these observations.
Viewers will be invited to create and share their own ekphrastic responses at the end of the programme with a creative writing prompt.
