In this edition of Cita Seni, join Dr Azhar Ibrahim and Okky Madasari in an online lecture and discussion on the writings of two of Indonesia’s literary icons: Raden Adjeng Kartini and Nh. Dini.
Raden Adjeng Kartini: Conscience and Consciousness
by Dr Azhar Ibrahim
Raden Adjeng Kartini is a symbol of woman’s emancipation in Indonesia. Her letters demonstrated her intellectual horizon, moral sensitivity and deep sense of commitment to her people and their destiny. Although well known for speaking up on women rights, it was the rights and welfare of the Javanese society and humanity at large that became her prime commitment. A discerning thinker and social observer, Kartini’s ideas and actions have inspired many Indonesians throughout the decades.
Nh. Dini: Courage and Intellectualism
by Okky Madasari
Nh. Dini is undoubtedly Indonesia’s greatest woman writer. This can be seen from her works and how they influence the contemporary and future generations. Her works questioned existing values, challenged narratives of women and defined the courage of being a woman during a time of unimaginable religious, social and political suppression. It is a fact that Nh. Dini’s works and positions are in line with feminism, earning her the title of a feminist. However, she preferred to be known as ‘a woman who seeks justice’.
