We’re all familiar with how British colonialism transformed human civilisation back when Singapore was still a fishing village, but little do we know of the impact it had on our local wildlife. Learn all you want to know from the expert himself–author of Imperial Creatures, Tim Barnard will be at the Huggs-Epigram Coffee Bookshop to talk about what it was like to live with animals then, and now.
Timothy P. Barnard is a historian of the environment and culture of Southeast Asia, and is currently Associate Professor in the Department of History at NUS. He has published four single-authored monographs, two edited collections, and over 25 book chapters. His latest book, Imperial Creatures, weaves together a series of fascinating tales to document how various “imperial creatures” in Singapore were impacted by colonialism—tiger and bull fights, exotic animal trades, how the island state dealt with the import of rabies, and much more are discussed in this fascinating book.
