It's a paranoid & cautious time but this month's show (& our 30th edition) will go on! Spoke & Bird are super excited to welcome not one but TWO incredible feature poets, AMAL, an exciting new voice all the way from Syria via KL, and the passionate and exceptionally talented THEOPHILUS KWEK!
Amal is a Syrian spoken word poet. She has performed at University Of Malaya, and open mics under InkQbate, Jack it and and has been featured at JALAN DALAM. She came in second at the Queerlah Lumpur Poetry Slam 2019 and was crowned champion at Merdekarya Fest 2019. She performed Fractured World: Displacement, Diaspora and Poetry at Ilham Gallery. And had a reading showcase for Voices at Georgetown Literary Festival 2019.
Theophilus Kwek is a writer and researcher based in Singapore. His essays, poems and translations have appeared in The Guardian, The Times Literary Supplement, The London Magazine, and elsewhere. He has been shortlisted twice for the Singapore Literature Prize, and his next poetry collection is forthcoming in the UK from Carcanet Press.
