The genre termed as Catatan Perjalanan (Travel Log) in the Malay discourse covers a variety of works in the form of diaries, travelogues and personal accounts, in prose and verse. Since the 19th century, there were a few works of this nature written by prominent literati and intelligentsia. This lecture aims to survey such works, with special attention to evaluate the social and political criticisms made by the writers, as well as their historical insights in the process of witnessing those momentous events and personalities of their time. Amongst the works to be discussed are Abdullah Munshi’s Kisah Pelayaran Abdullah (1838), Ibrahim Munshi’s Kisah Pelayaran Muhammad Ibrahim Munshi, (19) Salleh bin Perang’s Tarikh Datuk Bentara Luar Johor (1928), Zaba’s, Pengembaraan ke Kedah, Perlis dan Kelantan (1928-29), and Harun Aminurashid’s Mengesan Jejak Pelayaran Abdullah Munshi (1966).
