Singapore has always spoken in many tongues at once. We code-switch between Cantonese and Malay, hear Bangladeshi and German and Ilocano on the streets, feel the texture of Tamil or Hokkien or Arabic or Singlish as familiar even if we don’t speak it. One person may know three, four, seven languages at once. Our poetry is no different.
Any Anything Also Can is a broadside exhibition of multilingual poetry presented by Sing Lit Station: an eight-poem taster showcasing the linguistic possibilities Singapore has given its writers. You’ll find weird poems and lyric poems; poems old and new, about place, about self, about loving words; songs; how meaning can go wrong; how to hold it together even if you might not understand it all.
The broadside is a public medium, meant to be read in the street, in communion with strangers. Artistically reimagined by Fellow and qu’est-ce que c’est design, Any Anything Also Can is a meeting point between Sing Lit Station's advocacy in the literary arts and the best minds in graphic design as practiced in Singapore today.
