What exactly makes poetry such a powerful art form? What tools do poets use to add strength and conviction to their words? Are all poems just well-crafted arguments?
In this special workshop, join poet Stephanie Dogfoot to examine how contemporary poets use their word choices, voices, performance styles and rhetorical techniques to persuade audiences and readers to see things from their point of view, win hearts and open minds. We will look at examples of some of the best spoken word poetry from both at home from abroad, and attendees will get to know the secrets behind the magic of powerful poetry.
Participants will also get the chance to write their own persuasive poem and perform it.
Stephanie Dogfoot has performed her work all over Europe and Southeast Asia, from the Glastonbury Festival and the Poetry Slam World Cup in Paris to theUbud Writers and Readers Festival and the Indian Ocean Poetry Slam on Reunion Island. She wrote and performed in a one-woman poetry show about activism and identity called Foreigner Go Home (With Me!) which premiered at the Edinburgh Free Fringe Festival in 2012.
Currently based in Singapore, she runs a poetry open mic night called Spoke & Birds, a storytelling night called the Singapore Story Slam, and a stand up comedy night called Siao Char Bors which focuses on promoting women and queer people in comedy.
