Authors Balli Kaur Jaswal and Pooja Nansi will be reading from their recent work, followed by a Q&A and then a reception.This event is free and open to the public.
Balli Kaur Jaswal's fiction and non-fiction has appeared in the UK Sunday Express, Cosmopolitan Magazine, The New York Times, Harpers Bazaar and Best Australian Short Stories. Jaswal was the recipient of the Sydney Morning Herald Best Young Australian Novelist Award for her debut novel Inheritance. Her second novel Sugarbread was shortlisted for the Epigram Books Fiction Prize and the Singapore Literature Prize. She has been a writer-in-residence at the University of East Anglia and Nanyang Technological University. Her internationally acclaimed novel, Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows, was a Reese Witherspoon's Book Club pick, with film rights acquired by director Ridley Scott.
Pooja Nansi is Singapore's first Youth Poet Ambassador. Her work has been described as "unflinching, lyrical and quietly honest". She is the author of two collections of poetry, Stiletto Scars and Love is An Empty Barstool. Her one woman show You Are Here which explores a family history of migration was first showcased as part of the Esplanade's Studio series in 2016 and has since toured to Australia for the Queensland Poetry Festival. She was a recipient of the Young Artist Award in 2016 and her latest work Thick Beats for Good Girls in conjunction with Checkpoint Theatre in April 2018 explored the intersections between feminism, hip hop and race.
