Toa Payoh is the first town that is entirely designed and developed by the Housing Development Board (HDB). Built on farmland and swamps acquired by the state through the 1960s, the town is now home to over 100,000 Singaporeans and has played host to many visiting dignitaries and celebrities to Singapore.

Imagine the challenges faced by the architects and planners at that time, who planned for the town to be inclusive of all ethnicities and religions, when their reality was a blank piece of paper, barren land with insignificant features. The result today is a neighbourhood / precinct-based design that facilitates and encourages community cohesion.

This tour is inspired by the book Faith in Architecture (Ethos Books, 2015) edited by Gül İnanç, which is authored by 25 writers, capturing their impressions of significant places of worship across Singapore. Learn about the challenges of urban design in prescribing precincts and encouraging multi-cultural living.

This Walking Books Tour is a collaboration between Ethos Books and SCC Travel, and co-presented with the Singapore Heritage Festival 2018. Click on the links provided below for more information.
