Award-winning author Josephine Chia will be launching Goodbye My Kampong, Potong Pasir 1966 to 1975, sequel to her 2014 Singapore Literature Prize-winning Kampong Spirit, Gotong Royong Life in Potong Pasir 1955 to 1965.
This new collection of non-fiction stories charts the phasing out of attap-thatched villages alongside significant national events through the lived experiences of Josephine and fellow villagers. Expect to hear stories of the country's independence, industrialisation, conscription, cultural changes and more, paired to popular tunes of the era.
In the kampong spirit of sharing and celebrating, Josephine Chia will personally prepare small tasting portions of her family's traditional Peranakan nasi lemak—coconut rice with ikan bilis, cucumber, and sambal—to share with you. Light afternoon tea refreshments will also be available.
The event venue is supported by The Arts House.
