Speakeasy #31: Yong Shu Hoong, William Beale

  • Artistry 17 Jalan Pinang Singapore, 199149 Singapore (map)

Speakeasy returns in May for its 31st edition, curated by tireless Youth Poet Ambassador Pooja Nansi, featuring poets Yong Shu Hoong and William Beale.

Yong Shu Hoong is the author of five poetry collections, including Frottage (2005) and The Viewing Party (2013), which both won the Singapore Literature Prize. He is the editor of anthologies like Here Now There After (2017), which was part of The Commuting Reader series commissioned for the #BuySingLit movement. He has also co-written The Adopted: Stories from Angkor (2015) and Lost Bodies: Poems Between Portugal and Home (2016). His poetry chapbook, Right of the Soil, was jointly published by NTU and Ethos Books in 2016.

William Beale is an Australian spoken word poet whose work has been called “a boy howling his way into the world, despite all its muzzles.” Author and composer of debut poetry collection and album, THEY CALL US LOUD (Perfect Binding Press), William represented Victoria as one of the top 15 Australian poets of 2016 at the Australian Poetry Slam in the Sydney Opera House.

Former Creative Producer of Melbourne's Slamalamadingdong, Co-founder of Malaysia's If Walls Could Talk, winner of the 10th BOH Cameronian Awards for Best Book & Lyrics, and a handful of Australasian slam cups. William shares and creates stages around Asia Pacific, pursuing performance art, coaching slams, organising poetry events and doing the word things.
